Hi Ian. The classes will be recorded. I hope you will try to attend the class live when you can (good for practicing Pāli pronunciation, and asking questions directly) and keep up with classes by recording otherwise.

Hi Sean,
Look forward to having you in the class. A little bit of Sanskrit knowledge will indeed be helpful.
John
Excellent, Joseph. Were you part of an earlier Pāli class of mine, but then dropped out? Your name looks familiar. If so, good to see you again for another crack at it.
that’s me! once more into the breach! ![]()
Thank you so much for offering this course, @johnk. Please sign me up!
I’m Ātāpī Upāsako, located in the UK. I have very basic knowledge of Pali - I’m currently on chapter 18 in the Pali Primer.
I’ve been looking for a structured course for a while and I’m really looking forward to starting this course in March.
Thank you again for setting this up.
Mettā,
Ātāpī
Welcome to the class, Ātāpī. That’s great you’ve worked through a lot of de Silva already. Keep it up until we start classes in early March.
Name: Sandeep Kharat
Timezone: Indian standard time
Experience: familiar with some Pali words
Thank you for the opportunity to learn Pali.
From March, approximately until when will the batch (take 4) run?
Welcome to the class, Sandeep.
My/our class goal is to go through the entirety of the excellent book by Gair and Karunatillake, A New Course in Reading Pāli. This book has 12 rather dense chapters which I find usually takes about 2 weeks each to go through all the grammar and do all the exercises. So along with an introductory lesson this means about 25 online zoom classes to complete. And with a two-week gap between classes, this means about 50 weeks all up.
Thank you! Do you need an email address to send us details about the course (Zoom link, etc.)?
No email address needed. All course details, including the Zoom links, etc. will be posted on this thread on the Sutta Central Discuss and Discover forum. So just keep an eye on this Pāli course site.
Hi @johnk.
I hope you are doing well.
Once again, thank you so much for this opportunity! ![]()
The book New Course in Reading Pāli has just arrived here in Curitiba, Brazil. I am really happy about this.
I must confess that I tried studying a bit on my own the Pāli Primer by Lily de Silva, but I realized that I will really need support and guidance. So sorry about that. ![]()
Beyond learning Pāli generally, my specific goal is to read the Aniccasaññasutta fluently. While one of my inspirations is the philosophy of Harivarman, I also simply hope to recite Aniccasaññasutta one day. My ultimate aim is to have this text firmly in my heart, and I am eager to find the means to achieve this. And of course, I have other reasons for learning Pāli as well.
Thanks, everyone!

I have received the book.

I have 10 years or so chanting and listening to dhamma talks experience and have memorized some vocab through flashcards. Thanks for your time! Mondays 12 EST I will be at work, though I will follow along with the recorded lessons.
Sounds great, Paolo.
If you stick through the course to the end, there’s no reason at all you can’t reach your Pāli goals. It’s great you have that as a motivation!
See you in class, John
Welcome, Paul.
The class time for you will be 12 midnight (East coast US time). So, recordings it will be for you right now.
Assuming my health and energy levels last, later in the year I plan to start a new course in the morning my time, which will be 6 or 7pm for you, which I suspect would be a lot better.
John
Hello John,
My name is Sāmaṇera Nipako and I am interested in joining your class.
I am at Empty Cloud in NJ, GMT -05:00.
I might be in Italy for April, which would mean I am GMT +01:00 at that time.
I previously took some pali with Bhante Suddhaso here at EC, and I’ve done a good chunk of Ajahn Brahmali’s online course for AK Warders book. I have learned I am a slow language learner between my Pali and Italian ![]()
You are very welcome to join us, ven. Nipako. If you are in Italy the timing might work well, however if you are in New Jersey, then a class start time of 2am or 3am (depending on your daylight savings time) would be challenging.
It would be at 3:00am unfortunately, but it is only twice a month so I’d make it work. I used to wake u at 3:00am in lay life for my job so at least I know I’ll be alright. Looking forward to it!
Hi, John.
I texted you last year concerning this course.
Full Name: Matheus Hoffmann Pfrimer
Dharma name: Kosei

Thanks for the opportunity of learning Pali.

Yes, I remember you did, Kosei (Matheus), and I would be very happy if you can join us. As you may have seen in the thread above there is another person, Paolo (from Caritaba) also in Brazil planning to do the class. I hope you are also an early riser since the class start time is 5pm Brisbane time, which will be 4am for you in Brazil. I admire your dedication and look forward to meeting you online.
No worries. I am an early riser. Yes, I saw the thread above. I am used to wake up at this time to meditate. So no problem. Thanks for your dedication to teach us Pali.
