To not to be a thief and take consciousness (and its objects) to be ‘self’ or ‘mine’ (and therefore to not be punished with dukkha for stealing).

This is an interesting interpretation of the analogy. I’ve never heard of it interpretated in this manner. Is there a source to it?

IMO, “Sati” is like “power supply” in a laptop.
It’s right “power alone (Sati alone)” cannot do; but only with power (Sati), the rest becomes feasible.
