Appears to be a survey of ideas from largely the vinaya texts and of multiple traditions, but doesn’t seem to go into the issues of possible historical layering among the text passages.
Of interest in the context of several discussion threads here will be the final section of the paper: “Relevance for contemporary Buddhism”.
