Perhaps the two are not so distinct: SN12.44 and SN35.23
While an “external” reality is not denied in the Buddha’s teachings, the world that can be directly known, accessed, and practiced in terms of Dhamma are via the khandhas and senses. How that world appears and is experienced, physically and mentally, appears to us now was “painted” by our intentions.
