It appears that on small screens (at least in my browser) when “plain” view (i.e. no Pāli) is selected and “Show as side notes” is selected, the Pali is also shown E.g. Snp2.1:
It also happens in the German translations, e.g. DN1:
I wasn’t able to quickly find a sutta that had both no annotations as well as no variations to see if it still happened.
