In this sutta, the brahman Jata Bharadvaja went to the Blessed One. As a brahman, do we believe Jata Bharadvaja:

  1. Knew the Buddhist teachings?

  2. Knew the Buddha’s redefinition of the Brahmanistic term ‘nama-rupa’ from ‘name-form’ to ‘mentality-materiality’?

If not, when the Buddha replied: “Where name-&-form…totally stop without trace”, was the Buddha referring to the ‘nama-rupa’ found in the Buddhist Dependent Origination or was the Buddha referring to the Brahmanistic ‘nama-rupa’ understood by Jata Bharadvaja?

Is there the danger or possibility that a misapprehension of this sutta will lead the reader into taking ‘nama-rupa’ to mean the Brahmanistic ‘naming-forms’ or believe the tangle is cut when the Buddhist nama-rupa of ‘materiality-mentality’ is annihilated?

Is it possible that Jata Bharadvaja only understood the Buddhist meaning of ‘nama-rupa’ after receiving the going forth?
