I thought this might interest some of you – an overview of American Theravada I wrote for Lion’s Roar.
To make a map of American Theravada that is much larger than the “mindfulness movement,” I covered numerous Asian American communities, the Bhikkhuni Sangha, jhana practice and more.
It was really fun to work on this. I interviewed two dozen senior teachers and monastics, including Ajahn Pasanno, Bhikkhu Bodhi, Joseph Goldstein, Ayya Tathaalooka, Venerable Dejapanno, and learned a great deal!
I hope this piece will help build bridges between communities and expand our knowledge of the rich and varied Theravada traditions taking root in this country.
