4 basic indispensable meditation methods

Before you try to learn the 42, start by having a basic working understanding and practice of these 4 basics.

For comparison purposes, the 42 EBT meditation subjects, all except the 4 arupa samadhi samapatti have explicit EBT text tying it to the 7sb (awakening factor) causal sequence machine. Each of the 42 meditation subjects, are known as nimittas, or samadhi nimittas, or sati, or satipathana, or anu-sati-thana (basis for recollection), sometimes also known as a dhamma-vitakka, or a dhamma.
The first of the 7sb, sati-sambojjhanga, its job is to “remember” a Dhamma, or a samadhi-nimitta, and feed it into the 7sb machine. The particular nimitta remembered usually has the ability to inspire pamojja (gladness), pīti (rapture, the 4th of the 7sb factors), leading to an organic and connected entry into samadhi.
In extreme contrast, later Theravada, later Abhidhamma, in the Vism., they make a sharp divide between samatha and vipassana (in EBT they’re tightly integrated and inseparable). The first 10 of the 40, or kasinas, visual objects for doing samatha kung fu, which hardly appear in the EBT at all. They are in the EBT, with no explanation or detail on how to practice, and likely are there as a smuggled import by later Theravada.
With the VRJ (vism. Redefinition of jhana), every meditation topic that is capable of four jhanas (from the EBT), has been modfied to become a samatha kung fu visual based kasina practice. 16 APS (anapansati), the crown jewel of EBT meditation, is buried in the list at #29, and the practice of it has been redefined from tactile sensation of breath in the entire anatomical body, into a kasina type practice with a visual breath nimitta. The 4bv (brahmavihara), to get into VRJ (redefined jhana), now work like visual kasina. For example, you visualize your mother, make her into a mother image kasina, send metta to her kasina. Basically everything has to be a visual kasina to get jhana. Corpse contemplation also has been converted into a visual kasina practice.
In the EBT, samadhi nimittas means, any meditation topic that organically feeds the 7sb. MN 44 defines samadhi nimitta = the four satipatthana. In modern day Vism. Meditation, when they say nimitta, they’re talking about a visual kasina type of object, such as ‘breath nimitta.’
V&V, vitakka & vicara, means thinking and evaluation, everywhere in the EBT, including first jhana. In Vism., since they’re redefined jhana into a pure samatha kung fu to conform to their late Abhidhamma idea of momentariness, they’ve necessarily had to redefine what V&V means in first jhana (VRJ first jhana). Totally different than EBT first jhana.

What is the meaning of 42?

The number 42 is, in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, the “Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything”, calculated by an enormous supercomputer named Deep Thought over a period of 7.5 million years. Unfortunately, no one knows what the question is.

Are there any missing nimittas from the 42 EBT samadhi nimittas above?

Certainly things like

or the 5 nimittas of MN 20,

would fit in the list, but they’re more unique, not a basic indispensable often repeated subject in the EBT.
