Regardless of whether such ideas back then were considered sexist or not, who has the right to make such a call? Did the author actually know this to be fact through some sort of powerful meditation? (if so I need to shut up right now!) We’re these ideas developed intellectually to explain some unanswered questions? Or were these texts simply written to entertain. Stories of powerful kings with magical horses and elephants and perfect subjects is s great yarn (sounds a bit like Game of Thrones).
On the balance, I think there is sufficient research and evidence to suggest that stories such as these are just stories with no factual basis. Therefore we need to call out sexism, racism, elitism, etc, in ‘Buddhist’ texts so that it goes on record that even if such assertions cannot be proven to be categorically false, there is at least a strong basis upon which we can seriously question them. If not, we will have people accept such texts without question and potentially provide justification for their own sexist, racist, elitist views. Surely this is something we don’t want.
