Haiku: your pet peeve and other musings about Buddhism

Complaining in prose
or complaining in haiku
is still complaining.

Better than long prose
verses can help keep talks short
and so save us time.

Even small tree can
teach us without any words
how to live and love.

Seventh Precept asks
to give up singing only
not chanting or verse.

The Dhammapada
points to Dhamma-Vinaya
and so can Haiku.

Didn’t the Buddha
forbid singing the Dhamma?
To focus on meaning,

not delivery.
Does this really accord with
Dhamma-Vinaya?

Edit: explanation

There are, bhikkhus, these five drawbacks of reciting the Dhamma with a sustained melodic intonation. Which five?

  1. one gets attached to that intonation,
  2. others get attached to that intonation,
  3. householders get angry: ‘Those ascetics who are followers of the Sakyans’ son sing in the same way that we do!’
  4. there is a break in concentration for those striving [to produce] musicality,
  5. the upcoming generations imitate what they see.

It seems this principle regarding the dangers of singing Dhamma seems applicable to composing Dhamma talk in haiku form,

  1. one gets attached to the haiku form,
  2. others get attached to the haiku form,
  3. householders get angry: ‘Those ascetics who are followers of the Sakyans’ son compose haikus in the same way that we/poets do!’
  4. there is a break in concentration for those striving [to produce] the haiku form,
  5. the upcoming generations imitate the haiku form that they see.

All five of these seem relatively evident in this thread alone.
It seems inappropriate to discuss Dhamma in haiku form.

My own uneasiness with this seems to fall under point number 3.

Rule does not forbid
but most songs disturb the mind
Samadhi is lost.

Haiku is helpful
to cultivate Samadhi
and Panna as well.

The Buddha spoke verse

And complained as well.

This what bugs me most
is much talk but little change
in daily actions.

Earth is still warming
most Buddhists are slow to change
good calls they ignored.
