New Sutta workshop series from BSWA on the Noble 8 fold Path

Once again the BSWA, are presenting a 6 day series of workshops, to be held over February and March 2021.

Buddha in the Four Noble Truths identified the Noble Eightfold Path (N8P) as the path that will lead to cessation of Suffering.

  • What is the big-picture context for the N8P?
  • What are some typical misconceptions about the N8P?
  • How do we practise the N8P?
  • What is the relationship between the eight factors?
  • Are there any of the 8 factors which are more important than others?
  • How should the factors be understood in detail?

With these questions and more, we will need, not one, not two, but THREE TEACHERS, to show us the Path and how we should practise!!!

BSWA is pleased to organise the next Series of Workshops with focus on the N8P.

Ajahn Brahmali will continue to be the anchor monk delivering this Workshop. Bhante Bodhidhaja and Venerable Mudito will partner with Ajahn Brahmali for the Workshops on alternate Saturdays.

Details of the Workshops are as follows:

Dates: 20/2/2021, 27/2/2021, 6/3/2021, 13/3/2021, 20/3/2021, 27/3/2021 (6 Saturdays)

Will these be offered as video or audio recordings after their delivery?

They will be live streamed, so you can watch in real time, and submit questions via the comments. They will also be uploaded onto the BSWA you tube channel afterwards.

Enjoy! :smiley:

Bhante @brahmali, in some of your slides you quoted SN45.4, a sutta in which the Buddha uses the image of an ancient chariot with its parts.

I believe that showing a picture of the basic parts of an Indian Bronze-Age chariot would be helpful to illustrate the powerful the simile introduced the Buddha. Here it is:

This is a way to understand how these are all terms for the noble eightfold path:
Iminā kho etaį¹ƒ, ānanda, pariyāyena veditabbaį¹ƒ yathā imassevetaį¹ƒ ariyassa aį¹į¹haį¹…gikassa maggassa adhivacanaį¹ƒ:
ā€˜vehicle of Brahmāā€™, or else ā€˜vehicle of truthā€™, or else ā€˜supreme victory in battleā€™.ā€
ā€˜brahmayānaį¹ƒā€™ itipi, ā€˜dhammayānaį¹ƒā€™ itipi, ā€˜anuttaro saį¹…gāmavijayoā€™ itipÄ«ā€ti.
That is what the Buddha said.
Idamavoca bhagavā.
Then the Holy One, the Teacher, went on to say:
Idaį¹ƒ vatvāna sugato athāparaį¹ƒ etadavoca satthā:
ā€œIts qualities of faith and wisdom
ā€œYassa saddhā ca paƱƱā ca,
are always yoked to the shaft.
Dhammā yuttā sadā dhuraį¹ƒ;
Conscience is its pole, mind its strap,
HirÄ« Ä«sā mano yottaį¹ƒ,
and mindfulness its careful driver.
Sati ārakkhasārathi.
The chariotā€™s equipped with ethics,
Ratho sīlaparikkhāro,
its axle is absorption, and energy its wheel.
jhānakkho cakkavīriyo;
Equanimity and immersion are the carriage-shaft,
Upekkhā dhurasamādhi,
and itā€™s upholstered with desirelessness.
anicchā parivāraį¹‡aį¹ƒ.
Good will, harmlessness, and seclusion
Abyāpādo avihiį¹ƒsā,
are its weapons,
viveko yassa āvudhaį¹ƒ;
patience its shield and armor,
Titikkhā cammasannāho,
as it rolls on to sanctuary.
yogakkhemāya vattati.
This supreme Brahmā vehicle
Etadattani sambhÅ«taį¹ƒ,
arises in oneself.
brahmayānaį¹ƒ anuttaraį¹ƒ;
The wise leave the world in it,
Niyyanti dhīrā lokamhā,
sure of winning the victory.ā€
aƱƱadatthu jayaį¹ƒ jayanā€ti.

Happy to help bhante!
Just to be clear. I am not the author of the sketch. The source for it is:

Stuart Piggott, Prehistoric India to 1000 BC , Middlesex, Penguin, 1949, pp. 278ā€“83.
A pdf copy/scan of it can be downloaded from here: http://cslrepository.nvli.in/handle/123456789/6225
( the diagram is found at page 285 of the PDF, and the relevant chapter start on page 249)

Archeologists just announced the discovery of an intact chariot found in Pompeii:

Thatā€™s in Europe, several hundred years after the Bronze Age in India. Itā€™s hard to see from the photograph how close it is in design to Gabrielā€™s diagram, but what an exciting find. :grin:

I appreciated that questions were through a mike :+1: :studio_microphone:
It shows awareness and consideration for beyond whatā€™s immediately visible.
