Imho: “pleasure (that is) good-mental-states”

From page 9 of Warder’s “Introduction to Pali”:

Pali sentences do not all contain verbs. When it is asserted simply that a thing is something (as epithet or attribute or “predicate”) two nouns (one of them usually an adjective or pronoun) may merely be juxtaposed. Usually the “subject” stands first…

Or rather, that somanassaṃ functions as “attribute-noun” (pg. 61).

are both interpretations grammatically possible?

The way I might begin to reason the possibility of the (and) interpretation is to say that there are plenty of instances where lists of substantives are given without the expected ‘ca’ or ‘vā’. Two recently encountered examples are:

[SN 12.2]
Katamañca, bhikkhave, nāmarūpaṃ? Vedanā, saññā, cetanā, phasso, manasikāro— idaṃ vuccati nāmaṃ.
And what, bhikkhus, is name-and-form? Feeling, perception, volition, contact, attention: this is called name.

[SN 14.12]
Kāma­pari­yesanaṃ, bhikkhave, pariyesamāno assutavā puthujjano tīhi ṭhānehi micchā paṭipajjati—kāyena, vācāya, manasā.
Engaged in a sensual quest, the uninstructed worldling conducts himself wrongly in three ways—with body, speech, and mind.

I’d want to go through some other grammar books before deciding definitively for myself. Prof. Wijesekera for one has a ~300-page book just on Pali nouns :tired_face:

As a footnote, I believe the reading “pleasurable good-mental-state” is also there, with sukhaṃ as adjective/attribute rather than somanassaṃ.
