SuttaCentral 2021: bug reports here! šŸ›

Ha!! This is span class=ā€˜counterā€™ title=ā€˜counterā€™ I tried to sound it out but of course that doesnā€™t work.

Hi Bhante,
I really like the new update. Far easier to navigateā€¦ however, clicking the ā€˜viewsā€™ button pops out a menu/layer without a background. (Safari 12.1 on OSX10.14.4)

in Chrome the same page the ā€˜viewsā€™ dropdown is working but my browser (Chrome Version 89.0.4389.90) is detecting as being a handheld device :woman_shrugging: (why is there no : monastic_shrugging : ?).

Thatā€™s crazy, that shouldnā€™t exist at all, some bug in the code is producing it.

It works fine for me, can you define exactly the process that produced such a URL? Thanks!

The aim is to extend and correct CPED, so ideally that shouldnā€™t be the case. Can you give some examples?

That would be fantastic! Weā€™re actually planning to extend the NCPED with reference to Coneā€™s latest edition of the Dictionary of Pali. Iā€™ve been meaning to contact our original volunteer about this, but havenā€™t got around to it.

Thanks!

Hmm, looks like a safari bug, weā€™ll look into it. (BTW you canā€™t see a error in the console at all, can you?)

Thanks @HongDa I gave that a go.

It got to 99% of download but then I got an error message saying it ā€œfailed to download requested filesā€, or something similar to that. The message disappeared too quick for me to actually read it properly.

EDIT: I managed to get the app, but it is the same problem that if I can only see suttas I have previously viewed online.

Nope. No errors in console, but I canā€™t actually dig into the HTML at all. All I can see in the inspector is <sc-site-layout></sc-site-layout>which appears empty. I donā€™t know what kind of new fangled wizards youā€™re using!

Also, while I was waiting for the Sutta to load, it briefly popped up undefined

On the homepage, the SC logo has shrunk! (also in Safari as above)

This is not so much a bug, just inconsistent behaviorā€¦

  1. Navigate to a sutta of your choosing
  2. Click ā€˜Infoā€™ - panel displays
  3. Click ā€˜Infoā€™ again - panel hides

Rinse and repeat 1- 3 all day long if desired - happy happy joy joy.

Repeat steps 1 + 2 but this time:
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā  3b. Click anywhere in the sutta body, info panel hides
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā  4. Click ā€˜Infoā€™ button again, panel does NOT display. :scream: Oh no! What to do?!
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā  5. Click ā€˜Infoā€™ again, panel displays as normal

Similar behavior occurs for the ā€˜Parallelsā€™ panel, but not for the 'Views" panel.

[edit: Chrome on Win10]

Itā€™s at this moment I recall a sutta somewhere saying something like ā€˜a fault-finding mind will not find liberationā€™ā€¦so Iā€™m not calling this a fault, merely a quirk.

As votaries of the dark path, we invoke the mystic powers of the Shadow DOM! May our page remain hidden from unexpected CSS cascades and, it seems, the feeble sight of Safariā€™s inspector! :woman_mage:

Iā€™m getting only ā€œundefinedā€ for the translations that we recently published (MA 4-10). Hereā€™s a screen grab of the inspector errors. Iā€™m using Edge 89 on Windows 10.

Thank you for your feedback

I will find a MacBook to test it to see where the problem is :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi, the new site is generally beautiful, and Iā€™m so grateful for what youā€™re all doing here. Thank you!

Iā€™m finding a bug thatā€™s fixed by clearing the cache, but itā€™s happened a few times to me (on Safari 14.0.3 on OSX 11.2.3 on a MacBook Pro):

All front page article links (/introduction, /start, etc.) and basket links (/pitaka/vinayaā€¦) open to blank pages, and search returns blank pages until cache is cleared.

Thanks & blessings!

I had been using the previous offline version of SC being totally unaware that there had been an update. However sincd few days ago when I found out and updated it Iā€™ve been unable to get it to work offline.

Iā€™ve cleared my cache, cleared all SC data, even fully wiped the Chrome app itself and still no luck. I tried CM Browser as well since somebody here said that was working but it has the same issue.

Hereā€™s a screenshot. The navigation menu doesnā€™t show up when offline unless I browse around online first. And I can only access what I have previously opened when online. For example if I only open one MN sutta online Iā€™ll be able to navigate to there when offline, but no other Suttas, Vaggas Ė™ or Nikāyas.

Iā€™m running latest Chrome on (rooted) Android 8.0. Digital Pali Reader works fine

For me in Windows 10, both Chrome and FireFox, I can hover over the cards on the home page and get a pointy finger, but it is not in all places clickable.

Also, not a bug necessarily, but I question the UX of having the alphabet selection list be exclusively in the actual alphabet.

Of course it is right and good to include the name of the alphabet in the script itself, but how are you deciding alphabetical order? I think itā€™s a fair assumption that anyone who is sitting down at the computer to use this list is also familiar with the English alphabet order. And I think itā€™s also a fair assumption that no one using this list will be familiar with all the alphabets so as to be able to find their own more easily in this list. (Side note: most of the Sinhala monks I know are more familiar with the English alphabetical order than the Sinhala alphabet order)

I guess if one is looking for oneā€™s own native alphabet the eye will go to it quickly. Now that I look more closely (because of the tool tips) I can see that they are already in the English alphabetical order.

And looking even more closely, I can see that Latin is at the top of the list (not a bad thing) although further down there is a chunk of ā€œRomanā€ systems. For all the non-specialists out there Iā€™d suggest that the item at the top be changed from Latin to English. I mean, insisting on it being Latin is kind of pedantic. Even Roman is odd when you think about it. Anyone who knew to look for Roman would definitely check for ā€œEnglishā€ next, whereas the opposite would not be true.

A weird oneā€¦ on my iPad
The fave icon for discourse is displaying as that of the bswa!
The main SC site is the usual 8 petal flower/wheel thingy

Doesnā€™t that deserve a price for the most hilarious bug? :1st_place_medal:

Sorry, this isnā€™t really a bug. I noticed that when the ā€œViewā€ options are open, if you use the scroll wheel the text below moves up and down. Maybe since Iā€™m on a small screen this seems a bit pointless since the options cover most of the screen. But then I noticed that if you hold down shift and scroll it actually scrolls the options left and right, which is cool. But I wonder if scrolling without shift should simply make the options move left and right when the pointer is over the options panel?

I havenā€™t looked through all the posts to see if this one is covered. One of the quickest ways to get to a particular sutta is to type the reference after the site URL. If I type suttacentral.net/ AN4.49 (with capitals) the page tries to redirect but produces a page that only has a header only (no sutta). If I type suttacentral.net/ an4.49 (lower case) I end up at the sutta. It used to make no difference whether I typed in upper or lower case. This issue would presumably affect incoming links as well.

Iā€™m on a Mac, using Firefox. The same thing happens on Safari.

Sorry, I hadnā€™t realized that the URLs would be ā€œprettified,ā€ obscuring the point I was trying to make. Iā€™ve removed the https prefix and put a space before the sutta reference in the URL so that you can see what I actually mean!
